Santorini is the most popular site in Greece and a place like no either.
I can say……..
Your trip to Greece is not going to be complete if you can’t visit this beautiful island.
The appealing blue domes buildings, breathtaking view, donkeys, stunning sunsets and the whitewashed houses are something everyone should see in person at least once in a lifetime.
I visited this island twice so far, and all I can say was I’m still fascinated with the view.
During our four days stay in Santorini, we went quad biking to explore the island, sunbathing in Kamari Beach, watch the sunset, swim into the black beach and eat greek food. As you can see, there are too many incredible things to do during a visit to Santorini.
So if you are planning a trip to this beautiful archipelago or even just fantasising about it, I have arranged for you a list of my best things to do here in Santorini that I hope you will enjoy as much as I did.
1. WATCH THE SUNSETS
Sunsets in Santorini are known for being the most stunningly beautiful in the world. Oia deserves the best vote of top 1 sunset places because when the sun goes down, the view is gorgeous. No words can describe for this stunning view. If you want to secure yourself to have a good seat and make your way up to the viewing platform, then you need to arrive at the very least an hour before sunset.
Don’t get me wrong, Oia is not the only spot for the beautiful sunset. You can go somewhere else to watch it and here is the list of the place I can think of you can visit for this type of experience:
- Akrotiri Lighthouse
- Amoudi Bay
2. HIRE A QUAD BIKE TO EXPLORE THE WHOLE ISLAND
There are few choices of transportations for getting around the island of Santorini but the most popular vehicle to use while cruising down the roads and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the island is renting the quad bike (ATV).
This ATV is such a must-do.
No need some tour guide or no waiting on public transportation. All you need is your ATV. This type of vehicle is much better to use than renting a car besides the open air feeling; you will never have a problem finding a parking spot even downtown in Fira and Amoudi Bay.
If you do nothing else but this while visiting Santorini, you’ll still have the best damn time ever.
- Bring your standard driving license
- Before searching for ATV shop, ask your hotel first if they can coordinate the day. This way will save lots of time.
- It can fit two people for one ATV.
- There’s a storage area to keep your belongings while driving and it locks.
- The rental shop will provide helmets, instructions and the key for your ATV.
- You will need to fill the ATV with gas and refill it again full tank before you return it to the owner.
Anyway, it’s easy to find an ATV rental shop, you can find it by seeing a line of quads parked at the front of the shop. For about 45 euros a day you can explore the whole island with the wind blowing through your hair. Also, you don’t have the hassle to pick it up because they will drop it off to you.
3. WALK AROUND OIA
Oia is the famous attraction in Santorini and way more romantic than Fira. It is very crowded like every touristic place but even that it worth seeing it. A charming village with small cosy shops and galleries, excellent restaurants and amazingly designed houses and villas.
But the best one is “Nature”.
We could stay and watch the sea for hours. The sunlight, the sky, the architecture and the sea make a view that I’ll never forget. I would probably recommend it when on Santorini. Due to its beauty, this is one of the unique things to do in Santorini.
4. SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY THE VIEW
Santorini is the most beautiful island in Greece and an appearance you will want to remember forever. Also, there are so many stunning places to go to this island, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to explore it all.
But even if you are just there for four days, it’s still important to take some time to sit back and appreciate the scenery it has to offer.
5. WALK THE STEP FROM OIA TO AMOUDI BAY
You can reach the small port of Ammoudi by stepping 300 steps leading down the town of Oia. To be honest, it was challenging and tiring, but you will be rewarded with breathtaking views along the way and taverns in Oia offer visitors tasty meals of fresh fish to refuel them and give them an extra energy. 😀
If you are planning to view this beautiful Amoudi Bay:
- better to pack some comfy shoes
- bring some water
- head off in the early morning or later afternoon to avoid the intense midday sunshine.
6. EXPLORE THE TOWN OF FIRA
Fira is the modern capital of the Greek Aegean island of Santorini and a busy town.
The central streets are overcrowded with tourists especially during summer or in high season. This place filled with all kind of shops, pieces of jewellery, restaurant, cafes, bars and nightclubs. Also, you can find some appealing churches that attract attention as the sheer beauty of the town’s architecture, that is just too good to miss.
One more, don’t forget to visit the Three Bells of Fira. 🙂
This church is in a good location for photography with the ocean and islands as backdrops.
It is easy to find just off the main path between Imerovigli and Fira or use your google map. 🙂
7. EAT FROZEN YOGHURT
If you are in Fira, you must check out Louya or Chillbox. They are the best Frozen Yoghurt shops in Fira.
This Froyo satisfied a craving for a cold treat after a day of wandering around in the Santorini heat.
My boyfriend and I are so glad that we decided to try it as it was one of the best frozen-yoghurts we have attempted to before. It’s too bad that it wasn’t all we can eat! And of course, Froyo can be any time of the day, and you can have it also first thing in the morning.
If you are at Froyo shop, they have four to five flavours of yoghurt to choose with a variety of toppings such as cut fruits, chopped nuts or melted chocolate bars.
So, try it. You will love it 🙂
I recommend this to anyone stopping in Fira to get this fantastic froyo.
8. BUY SOMETHING SPECIAL
I have learned over the years that it’s essential to buy one particular thing from each place you visit to remind you of your trip.
So, exclusive doesn’t spell out to expensive. It merely needs to be meaningful to you.
Many of us purchased a poster, keychain or fridge magnet.
I bought leather sandals for myself and Santorini Plate for my mom.
9. GET A FISH SPA TREATMENT
You should have this type of experience.
It’s okay if you make a stop to get a fish therapy treatment for the hands or feet at Fish Spa Kagal Wellness Center after you stroll the town of Fira.
I visited this spa twice and loved it both times. The spa was immaculate.
They use tiny Garra Rufa fish to gently suck away the dead skin on your hands or feet which is leaving it smooth. This technique was primarily designed to help people with dermatological conditions, such as eczema, but it can also be very relaxing.
When you first put your feet in the water, you can feel the weird sensation and ticklish until you get used to it.
Believe me; you will enjoy this fish spa treatment.
10. TAKE A CABLE CAR RIDE
There are always three ways to get from the town of Fira down the Old Port in Santorini like take a weary donkey, walk almost 600 steps or take the cable care.
Do you want to know which one I prefer?
Well, I will pick for least smelly and laborious of them all, so I prefer riding a cable car which comes every twenty minutes and only costs for only 5 euros each way.
A few people can also use this cable car to admire the beautiful view of the stunning caldera, the sea and the volcano from a 220 meters altitude.
11. EXPERIENCE THE REAL ROMANTIC DINNER WITH A VIEW
This type of dinner with a view is nice to do at least one night to spend your time a little at one of the many restaurants overlooking the ocean and the most sentimental things you can do if you can catch the sunset during your meal.
Book your reservation for sunset and prepare to have your mind blown.
The last time we were in Santorini we ate out at Aris Restaurant, a reasonably priced restaurant at Fira with a stunning view over the ocean and you can hear live orchestral music in the background. We totally enjoyed our meal at Aris because of the peaceful surrounding, fantastic view and the food was delicious.
We entirely turned our dinner with a smile!
12. VISIT THE RED BEACH
Your list of things to do in Santorini is not complete without some great photo of this famous Red Beach.
The Red Beach is a natural beach located close to the Akrotiri site.
The sand is red, but it’s difficult to get to the actual site because it’s rocky and no path.
You need to do it like the Greeks and walk past the signs that read “Danger Falling Rocks”. 😀
It is straightforward to lose your footings so be prepared and be very cautious.
So, for this reason, we don’t have the nerve to walk past the signs and reach the beach.
I didn’t think the actual beach was much to look at but what was quite stunning was the contrast of the crystal clear water against the red lava cliffs and shape of the shore make for a perfect Insta shot.
13. CHILL AT KAMARI BEACH
Kamari Beach is one of the most extensive and my favourite beaches in Santorini and a great spot to walk around and to relax. The water is spotless but pebbly so I would strongly advise you to bring your water shoes.
When we were there in the middle of August, the site was not too busy, and there is a lot of restaurant along the beach that offers free different seating and laying options for you to get comfortable, but you need to drink or eat first with their restaurant before you have a free umbrella and bed. 🙂
If you can’t manage to visit this beach, then you have more selection.
Here are the famous beaches of Santorini:
- Perissa beach Santorini: Black sand.
- Perivolos beach Santorini: the Longest black sand beach of the island.
- Vlychada: Regular, sandy beach well organised.
- Agios Georgios beach Santorini: Well organised beach, natural sand.
- Monolithos beach Santorini: Mainly for families. Even has a playground.
- White beach Santorini: Black pebbles at the shore, with white coloured hills.
14. EAT GREEK FOOD
It’s a high priority to seek out delicious and authentic food everytime you travel to the different country.
I know that there are a good many Greek specialities that you want to spend some time searching around. Also, I know you don’t want to leave Santorini without trying their delicious Greek food.
But, you don’t need to go to the touristry restaurant to try their Greek food.
Yes, you will know it quickly because there is a board with the extensive menus that are placed right on the front entrance of their restaurant. I know most of the restaurant will give you the perfect view but better to skip it.
You will probably find the best Greek food in the smaller, more low key and off the main path places.
But, if you are fun of Restaurant, check out Tripadvisor for the list of Santorini restaurants.
15. STAY AT YOUR HOTEL AND RELAX
If you are thinking about your budget or you only want to relax, then you can stay at your hotel because all of the hotels in Santorini have their pool and with the postcard view of Santorini. So, you can still enjoy your vacation while you are at your hotel.
My boyfriend and I chose the Azzuro Suite in Fira which is close to the markets and city centre, and I must say that the hotel views are stunning with caldera views and clear sunset and port.
Every morning, we have a free breakfast at their restaurant which gives you a fantastic view of the ocean and caldera view too. So, you will probably enjoy eating while looking at your beautiful view.
All in all, it was a fantastic and memorable experience.
